As mentioned in our previous report, the Jeep Meridian had already proven its worth in our Guinness World Records title attempt, shadowing the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV on the journey from Jaisalmer to Leh. But that wasn’t the end of its adventure. With Rahul and me behind the wheel, the Meridian went further – first to Hanle and then up the legendary Umling La, the world’s highest motorable pass. The reason? Quite simply: why not?
The Meridian had already endured the tough Mumbai–Jaisalmer–Leh route without a single fault. True, there were hurdles – a falling rock at Zoji La cracked the sunroof, forcing us to tape it shut for the rest of the journey. But the Jeep kept pushing on. After achieving our record at Khardung La, most of the crew flew back to Mumbai. Rahul, the Meridian, and I, however, stayed for the next leg.

Highway Confidence and Comfort
By this point, the Jeep’s cruising ability had impressed us deeply. On wide highways, it was steady, comfortable, and surprisingly efficient for such a large SUV. Push it hard and the engine gets vocal, but it still delivers power. On rough stretches like Jammu–Srinagar, the suspension absorbed the bumps well, though sharp jolts occasionally reached the cabin.
Hanle to Umling La: The Real Test
The drive from Leh to Hanle and onward to Umling La was unforgettable. The scenery shifted from lunar valleys to snowy peaks as the air grew thin and cold. At Hanle, the Meridian received its first dusting of snow before we began the climb via Photi La at 18,124 feet. The snow-covered pass tested traction, but in Snow mode, the Jeep climbed confidently.
At extreme altitudes, the engine power dipped, catching its breath at 18,000 feet. Still, with patience, the Meridian kept moving. Finally, we reached Umling La, surrounded by snow and silence – a rare moment where car, road, and nature aligned perfectly.
Victory Lap Home
The return journey felt almost celebratory. Back through Leh, onward to Kargil, and once again Zoji La – this time under blue skies with no traffic. It was as if the mountains were apologising for the earlier rockfall. We finally rolled into Srinagar and handed the keys to the drivers for the long return to Mumbai.

After 3,800 km together, parting ways wasn’t easy. The Jeep Meridian isn’t flawless – it can be noisy when pushed, bulky in the hills, and sluggish at high altitude. But it never failed us. It kept us safe, comfortable, and moving forward. And that’s exactly what you want from a companion on a trip like this.
